WORKSHOP ON TRADITIONAL EMBROIDERIES  :26^th JULY,2012

A workshop on Traditional Embroideries (Phulkari and Dasuti) on 26^th July,2012  was organized by the Department of Home Science for the students of Fashion Designing. The Resource person Miss. Veerpal Kaur, Lecturer in Fashion Designing discussed in detail about the different type of thread to be used on different types of fabric. Students attended the workshop with great interest and afterwards various samples were made by students. All the students and teachers appreciated and learnt a lot.

INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR ON BREAST CANCER & NUTRITION: 9^th AUGUST, 2012

Resource Person : Miss. Shelly Aggarwal , Resource Fellow, Texas Women University, U.S.A

An International seminar on Breast Cancer & Nutrition was organized by Home Science. Miss Shelly Aggarwal , resource person discussed in detail about the role of nutrition in cause and cure of breast cancer. Madam Principal was the Chief Guest for the occasion and Madam appreciated the work of Miss. Shelly. Resource person discussed her views through power point presentation. The topic of the seminar highlighted the importance of “Good Nutrition” in maintaining optimum health and keeping breast cancer away. She emphasized the importance of Calcium and Vitamin D in preventing breast cancer.Principal Madam concluded the Seminar by highlighting the importance of spiritual well being . She emphasized the concept of “Holistic Health “ and balance between inner spiritual well being and outer physical beauty  through nutrition. Participants asked the queries at the end of the seminar. 

COOKING COMPETITION : 16^th AUGUST,2012

Department of Home science conducted a Inter Class  Cooking competition on “ Desert –Making” .As is the tradition of India that a sweet dish is served to all after finishing the main meal and a meal is incomplete without a desert, so this time cooking competition on DESERT MAKING was planned by the department this time.A sweet dish item was prepared by all the participating teams .Madam Principal presided over the function and judged the best entry.

Lot of enthusiasm was seen in the students and all the teams put their best efforts to churn out the nutritious and tasty delicacies.The recipes included besan laddoo to malpuras to doughnuts etc. Besides wonderful cooking, students did best garnishing that made their sweet dish even more mouth watering. Efforts of the students were appreciated by staff members and Madam Principal and students bagged their prizes after judgement of Madam Principal.

INTER CLASS COMPETITION: ART AND HERITAGE ITEMS: 21^st AUGUST,2012

An Inter class competition on 21^st August,2012 was organized in the department in the categories: Rangoli making, Mehandi, Dasuti, Crochet, Knitting and Pakhi Making.The competition was planned so that students can exhibit their talent in all these heritage items. It was a Two Day Competition. Mehandi and Embroidery competitions were held on the occasion of Teej Fest, that added a more colourful look to the competitions . Respected Principal Madam judged the participants for the skills the students possessed. All the students were appreciated for putting the hard work . Prize winners collected their prizes at the end .It was indeed a very enjoy full experience.

WORKSHOP ON MICRO EXERCISES & SURYA NAMASKAR BY MISS MEENAKSHI PARMAR, YOGA INSTRUCTOR ON 30^th AUGUST,2012

Students of Home Science Department along with the faculty members participated in the Workshop on Micro Exercises And Surya Namaskar that was organized by the Cosmetology Department. The Workshop was held at Dev Samaj Mandir of  the college campus.Yoga therapist Miss Meenakshi Parmar , first introduced the students with the benefits of yoga in today’s life. She told students that how they can keep themselves fit  through doing these exercises daily. She taught students proper steps of Surya-namaskar and other exercises .At last , she asked students about the difference they felt after these exercises.It was indeed a very beneficial class for the ones who attended it.

NATIONAL SEMINAR ON ANEMIA ON 1^st SEPTEMBER,2012

Students of Home Science Department took active participation in  UGC SPONSERED NATIONAL SEMINAR ON : ANAEMIA: A NATIONAL HEALTH PROBLEM held at Banarsi Dass Arya Girls College ,Jalandar Cantt. Students actively participated in Poster Making Competition for the same. The participants were:

Neelam of M.Sc I Year bagged II^nd Position .Students shared that they  learnt a lot by participating in this Seminar and they were thankful to their teachers as they got a chance to  update their knowledge.

WORKSHOP ON DRAPING: 12^th SEPTEMBER, 2012

RESOURCE PERSON: MRS. RUCHI SHARMA, ASSISTANT PROF. IN FASHION DESIGNING

Department of Home Science and Fashion Designing organized a Workshop on “Draping Techniques for Different Garments” in Fashion Designing Lab. The Resource person ,Mrs. Ruchi Sharma gave an introduction to the topic Draping, at first. She told about the points to be remembered while draping. She told that draping is required for estimating the fabric required for various garments’ like skirt, top etc.

She told that why only muslin cloth is used fore draping and what further treatments are given to the muslin cloth before it is being used for draping. She highlighted how the pins are to be tucked while draping . She told how draping helps in designing various dree forms.The demonstration was highly appreciable and it was a learning experience for the students who attended the workshop.

EXTENSION WORKSHOP: 19^th- 21^th SEPTEMBER, 2012

Department of Home Science held a 3 day Extension workshop for Class IV Employees of the college. The aim was to teach the skills of self employment to the employees so as they can increase their income. The workshop was held on 3 different days in 3 different fields:

• Food Preservation
• Utility Articles from waste Material
• Printing Techniques on Fabrics

Faculty members and students felt happy on sharing their skills with all these people .Some employees really thanked  the faculty members for inculcating the art in them by which they could now get an additional income.

ZONAL YOUTH & HERITAGE FESTIVAL: 7^th-10^th OCTOBER, 2012

In the Session 2012-13 , our college,  Dev Samaj Post Graduate College For Women, Ferozepur City hosted 4 day long Punjab University Zonal Youth Festival.

Home Science students also participated in various Heritage items like Mehandi, Pakhi Making, Crochet, Embroidery, Phulkari. The participating students put in a lot of hard work and shed sweat to compete in these items and the results were overwhelming as the participants bagged prizes in all the categories:

All the participants were happy after they bagged prizes and thanked their teachers for teaching them these all skills. The teachers along with students were appreciated by Madam Principal as teachers left no stone unturned in choosing the best designs, best colour combinations and then removing small mistakes committed by the students and to make the sample perfect.

EXHIBITION CUM SALE ON KARWA-CHAUTH:23^rd OCTOBER,2012

Department of Home Science in collaboration with Department of Cosmetology organized an EXHIBITION CUM SALE on the occasion to mark the beginning of festivals. To celebrate the festival KARWA-CHAUTH  ,an exhibition cum sale was put up. The stalls displayed the items of ladies fashion including stalls on :

Bangles Stall

Hair Accessories Stall

Decorative Candle and Diya Stall

Cosmetics Stall

Respected Principal Madam inaugurated the exhibition. With the approaching festival Diwali everyone was in a buying mode .Everyone who visited the exhibition did not seem to leave the premises without a purchase. It was appreciated by one and all. Wonderful Comments of the visitors were received .

INTERZONAL YOUTH FESTIVAL

The participants of the winner in Zonal Youth Festival further participated in Inter Zonal Youth Festival.1^st Prize winners of Zonal youth festival further competed in Inter Zonal Youth Fest and showed their talent.Home Science Department participated in 4 events .The participants were:

Miss Parvinder Kaur ,the participant of Pakhi again bagged 2^nd Position in Inter Zonal and was happy and excited on winning the prize in such a tough competition. 

EXHIBITION ON CURATIVE PROPERTIES OF FRUITS AND VEGETABLES ON 9NOVEMBER,2012

An exhibition on the curative properties of fruits and vegetables was exhibited by M.Sc (Cosmetology & Health Care) students.

Under the subject of holistic approach to Good Health , these students prepared related posters and charts highlighting the curative properties of each vegetable and fruit available in the local market and prepared different recopies of each product, so that a variety can be introduced in the menu to encourage their consumption , in order to maintain good health and youthfulness. The work was appreciated by one and all.

UGC SPONSORED NATIONAL SEMINAR ON “ EMERGING TRENDS IN HEALTH, BEAUTY AND FASHION” ON 22 ND NOVEMBER,2012

Department of Home Science organized National Seminar on “Emerging Trends in Health, Beauty and Fashion” where eminent academicians across the region were invited to share their valuable knowledge on the mentioned topics.

The seminar served an important platform to update the knowledge in the respective field.

Poster presentation on the above theme was also exhibited and prizes were given to the best entries. Respected Principal Madam , the Chief Guest , inaugurated the session . Various students and research fellows presented their papers in the respective fields.It was very informative seminar for all the students and students thanked the faculty members for updating their knowledge so widely.

UGC SPONSORED NATIONAL EVENTS

The department in collaboration with Post Graduate Department of Cosmetology &Health Care organized a 3 Day UGC Sponsored National Event on :

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP ON – HOLISTIC APPROACH TO YOGA- 28 Nov,2012.

INDISPENSABLE COSMETOLOGY –A MULTIDIMENSIONAL APPROACH-29 Nov,2012

Scholars and Professionals from across the region participated in these 3 Day national event . Various Competitions like Poster Presentation, Power point Presentation , Quiz , Declamation were also held to mark the events.

FASHION SHOW 13 NOVEMBER,2012

Another UGC sponsored National Event on Fashion Show – FASHION SEDATE  was organized and held in The college on 13^TH November,2012 .The event was prepared and organized by the Department of Home Science and Fashion Designing students. The event was graced by our Respected Principal Madam. The models presented the creations of the emerging designers of the department of Fashion Designing.

WORKSHOP ON FLOWER ARRANGEMENT: 17 NOVEMBER, 2012

A workshop on Fresh flower arrangement was organized for the students to provide them with basic knowledge about flower arrangement and types of Flower arrangement suited to different occasion and position in the room The workshop was attended by a good number of students who found it useful.
