Title: Off Farm Entrepreneurship through Agro Processing and By-Product in Textile Utilization For Livelihood Security

Under the stewardship of worthy Principal Madam, Dr Ramnita Sharda, The Post Graduate Department of Fashion Designing, Dev Samaj College for women, Ferozepur city, organised a National level webinar on theme, ‘Off Farm Entrepreneurship through Agro Processing and By-Product in Textile Utilization For Livelihood Security’ on 23rd Dec, 2020 at 11.00 am. The resource person for the webinar was Dr. Nisha Verma, Scientist (Family Resource Management) , ICAR-Indian Institute Farming Systems Research, Modipuram, Meerut, 250 110, Uttar Pradesh, India.

The welcome keynote address delivered by worthy Principal Madam and marked the beginning of session. Being the co-ordinator of webinar, Dr Khushwinder Gill, Head Department of Fashion Designing gave a brief introduction about the topic and welcomed all the guests and participants for joining the webinar.

The resource person, in her presentation discussed Agriculture and allied activities that support livelihoods of nearly 70 per cent of India’s rural population. In recent years, land-based livelihoods of small and marginal farmers are increasingly becoming unsustainable, since their land has not been able to support the family’s food requirements and fodder for their cattle. Small-holders are under continuous pressure to increase production from their limited land resource. Thus, the sub-marginal- and marginal-size farms cannot remain “subsistence-oriented”. As a result, rural households are forced to look at alternative means for supplementing their livelihoods. In this context, off farm micro-enterprises through agro processing and by-product in textile and allied utilization have emerged as alternative livelihood opportunities in rural areas. In This context, Dr Verma discussed various entrepreneurial activities and processes started by women groups in different States and shared their names of Groups and contacts. She motivated the students to enhance and polish your skills to start your own ventures small scale businesses. She had also discussed policies and strategies of off farm activities to enhance sustainability.

It was a very informative session which helped everyone imbibe knowledge about the Off farming processes. A total of 98 people participated in the interactive session with an intensive question/answer session at conclusion. Many attendees sent their questions in the chat box during the session.
